Trust in your discernment leads to trust in yourself. – Julene Bair

In a day and age that is marked by overloaded information and societal pressures, the need for discernment has become more pressing than ever. The power of discernment enables individuals to make authentic choices aligned with their inner knowing and stay grounded amidst the chaos of modern life.

The spiritual gift of discernment is something that I have been working on for over 3 years. And it has only gotten better with every passing day. I used to be this totally unaware, hard-working, mindless girl filled with anxiety and stress. I totally lacked the power of discernment and understanding of what was happening around me and, more importantly, within me. It was only after my spiritual awakening and through disciplined meditation sessions did I cultivate this unshakeable power of discernment.

Today, I wish for both the enlightened and the unenlightened to grasp this inner power and practice it skillfully amidst life’s intriguing challenges.

So in this blog post, I am going to explain what a spiritual gift of discernment is all about, 9 practical ways to harness its power in everyday life, and how to enhance this innate gift in our lives.

What is the spiritual gift of discernment?

The spiritual gift of discernment holds profound significance in guiding individuals towards truth and wisdom. Rooted in various religious and spiritual traditions, discernment is often regarded as a divine gift bestowed upon those who seek higher truths. Discernment empowers individuals to perceive beyond the surface, navigating life’s complexities with clarity and insight.

At its core, discernment involves tuning into one’s intuition, recognising spiritual signals, and distinguishing between right and wrong. Whether faced with moral dilemmas, challenging relationships, or uncertain paths, the gift of discernment serves as a guiding light, illuminating the way forward.

By cultivating discernment, individuals develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them, enabling them to make choices that resonate with their authentic selves.

9 Proven Ways to Use the Spiritual Gift of Discernment

Utilising the spiritual gift of discernment requires a combination of inner reflection, mindfulness, and trust in one’s intuition. Here are practical ways to harness the power of spiritual discernment in everyday life.

1. Trust your intuition

Trusting your intuition is like having a built-in compass that guides you through life’s twists and turns. It’s that feeling in your gut—that inner knowing—that nudges you in the right direction, even when you can’t quite explain why. Your intuition speaks to you in whispers, urging you to listen and follow its guidance.

Recently, I encountered a banking scam during a phone call with a seemingly professional woman requesting details for a policy renewal. Despite her demeanour, my intuition raised suspicion, prompting me to scrutinise the situation. And I was right! The individuals were part of a scam hacking bank details linked to policyholders.

When you trust your intuition, you’re tapping into a deeper wisdom beyond logic and reasoning. It’s about learning to rely on your instincts and honouring the inner voice that knows what’s best for you. Whether it’s making decisions, navigating relationships, or sensing the energy of a situation, your intuition is there to guide you.

So, take a moment to quiet the noise around you, tune in to that inner voice, and trust that it will lead you exactly where you need to be.

2. Be present

Being present is about anchoring yourself in the here and now, fully engaged with the present moment. It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of thoughts about the past or worries about the future, but when you are present, you’re attuned to what’s happening right in front of you.

Check out how I cultivated mindfulness through art here. Art has undoubtedly helped me slow down in this fast paced world and has made me feel grounded and relaxed.

Mindfulness practices, such as deep breathing or simply observing your surroundings, can help cultivate present-moment awareness. By paying attention to the sights, sounds, and sensations around you, you become more attuned to the subtle cues and signals that your intuition sends.

So, take a deep breath, ground yourself in the present moment, and allow your intuition to guide you with clarity and insight.

3. Seek guidance

When you are using your spiritual gift of discernment, seeking guidance from your higher self plays a pivotal role. It involves recognising that you don’t have to navigate life’s challenges alone and that there are higher powers or trusted mentors available to offer support and insight.

I often ask for guidance from my spirit guides and angels whenever I need some clarity over a situation. I meditate and remain open to receiving signals. Now, what you need to understand is that these signals are subtle. You have to be highly aware and tuned in with your energies so you can find the solution or an answer to your questions from your divine team. Rest assured, they are always there by your side to guide you on your destined path.

Whether through prayer, meditation, or seeking advice from spiritual leaders, reaching out for guidance can provide clarity and perspective. It’s about acknowledging that there is wisdom beyond your own understanding and being open to receiving it.

So, don’t hesitate to lean on your spiritual beliefs or seek counsel from those who have walked a similar path before. Trust that guidance will come when you need it most, guiding you towards the truth and understanding of life situations.

4. Reflect and relax

Taking time to reflect and relax is essential for honing your spiritual gift of discernment. In the midst of life’s busyness, it’s easy to get caught up in the chaos and lose sight of what truly matters. However, carving out moments of quiet contemplation allows you to pause, breathe, and reconnect with your inner wisdom.

Reflection involves pondering your thoughts and decisions, examining your beliefs and values, and gaining insights from past experiences. Through meditation, journaling, or simply sitting in stillness, you create space for clarity to emerge and intuition to flourish.

Relaxation complements reflection by soothing the mind and body, reducing stress and tension that can cloud your judgement. Engaging in activities that bring you joy and peace, such as spending time in nature, practicing yoga, or listening to calming music, helps cultivate a sense of inner calmness and receptivity to intuitive guidance.

5. Know Your Limits

Spiritual gift of discernment

Understanding and respecting your limits is crucial for nurturing your spiritual gift of discernment. It’s about recognising what drains your energy and setting boundaries to protect your well-being. When you know your limits, you can preserve your mental, emotional, and spiritual health, allowing you to operate from a place of clarity and strength.

When I began my spiritual practices after my awakening happened, I didn’t know how much to reveal about my spiritual side and how much I should not. Due to my heightened awareness, it made me go crazy, as I was clearly able to see how people and situations around me were happening. Needless to say, I was exposed to all kinds of energies around me.

We all need to understand that we enlightened ones have to live around the unenlightened. Very rarely do we get to meet another enlightened one in person around us. Hence, knowing your boundaries is the key to protecting your energies and pursuing your spiritual gifts.

If you would like to know how I embraced miscommunications and mind attacks in my spiritual journey, you can find it here.

Setting boundaries involves identifying situations, relationships, or activities that deplete your energy or compromise your values. It’s about saying no when necessary and prioritising your own needs and boundaries. By establishing healthy boundaries, you create space for your intuition to flourish and your discernment to thrive.

Knowing your limits also means recognising when to step back and recharge. Taking breaks, practicing self-care, and seeking support when needed are essential practices for maintaining balance and resilience. Remember that honouring your limits is not a sign of weakness but a demonstration of self-respect and self-awareness.

This way, you create the foundation for your spiritual gift of discernment to guide you with clarity and wisdom.

6. Stay calm

This is possible only if you could sit to meditate every single day. Meditation is the only way out. I used to be this person who went all panicky, loud, and unstable. Ever since I started to meditate and read scriptures, I began to see how blissful it is within. It’s this inner world of calm and peace that makes me want to meditate again and again. Trust me, once you begin to meditate, you will never regret it and will soon find your calm. This will eventually help you harness your power of discernment.

Maintaining a sense of calm amidst life’s challenges is vital for nurturing and utilising your spiritual gift of discernment. When you remain calm, you create space for clarity and intuition to emerge, allowing you to make wise decisions even in the face of chaos or uncertainty.

Staying calm involves cultivating a sense of inner peace and resilience, regardless of external circumstances. It’s about adopting practices that help you manage stress and anxiety, such as deep breathing, mindfulness, or visualisation techniques. By calming the mind and body, you create a conducive environment for discernment to flourish.

Remind yourself that you have the inner strength and wisdom to navigate any challenges that come your way. Remember that staying calm is not about suppressing emotions or denying reality but about cultivating a sense of inner peace and clarity.

7. Help others

Using your spiritual gift of discernment to support and guide others is a powerful way to cultivate and enhance this innate ability. When you extend your discernment to help those in need, you not only offer valuable insights and guidance but also deepen your own understanding and refinement of discernment.

Helping others involves listening attentively to their concerns, offering empathetic support, and providing wise counsel when appropriate. By using your discernment to assess their situation and offer guidance with compassion and understanding, you empower them to make informed decisions and navigate life’s challenges more effectively.

Offering your discernment to others also fosters a sense of connection and community as you share your gifts and wisdom with those around you. Whether through formal mentorship, informal conversations, or acts of kindness, your willingness to help others enriches both their lives and your own.

8. Stay open-minded

Maintaining an open mind is essential for nurturing and enhancing your spiritual gift of discernment. Being open-minded allows you to consider different perspectives, explore new ideas, and remain receptive to the guidance of your intuition.

Open-mindedness involves being willing to challenge your beliefs and assumptions, to question the status quo, and to embrace uncertainty. It’s about approaching life with curiosity and humility, recognising that there is always more to learn and discover.

Practice staying open-minded by engaging in meaningful conversations with others, seeking out diverse viewpoints, and being willing to admit when you don’t have all the answers. By remaining open to new possibilities and insights, you create space for growth and expansion in your spiritual discernment journey.

By staying open-minded, you invite the universe to impart its wisdom and guidance, enriching your discernment process and deepening your understanding of yourself and the world around you.

9. Practice patience

Patience is a virtue that complements and enhances the power of your spiritual gift of discernment. It involves cultivating a calm and steady demeanour, even in the face of uncertainty or adversity, and allowing time for decisions to unfold naturally, trusting the timing of the universe and surrendering to divine wisdom.

Understand that some answers may not come immediately, but they will reveal themselves when the time is right.

Practicing patience means resisting the urge to rush into judgements or conclusions and surrendering to the unfolding journey of life. It’s about embracing the twists and turns, the ups and downs, knowing that each experience is a valuable opportunity for growth and learning.

In my case, I have been waiting for more than ten long years in one place. I am currently going through my spiritual awakening and isolation phase, with no idea how or when I will be moving on to the next phase of my life. That being said, it was only through cultivating patience and discernment of the situations around me that I received answers from my divine team for this long wait.

I trust the divine timing!
